****************Monday Recommendations from the Reading Circle****************
In marking Memorial Day 2021, we recommend the following books available at the Calvin T. Ryan Library:
· This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, by historian and former Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust, drew wide acclaim when it was published in 2008. It is available on the second floor of the library at call no. E468.9 .F385 2008
· The Great War and Modern Memory (1975) by Paul Fussell is one of those literary studies that found a readership with the general public. It can be found on the second floor of the library at call no. PR478.E8 F8x
· Paco's Story by Larry Heinemann won the National Book Award in 1987. It drew some criticism from the New York Times (LINK), because it received the prize over Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Philip Roth’s The Counterlife. The novel is narrated by the ghost of a Vietnam Vet who had served alongside the title character. It is available on the second floor of the library at PS3558.E4573 P3 1989.
Morrison’s Beloved can be found at PS3563.O8749 B4 1987 and Roth’s The Counterlife can be found at PS3568.O855 C6 1986 if you’d like to judge for yourself.
