Featured Major
This month’s featured student is Elijah Lynch.
I'm from Milford, NE, a town of about 2,000 just west of Lincoln. I've just transitioned from majoring in English Education to an English BA, in hopes of pursuing a Master's (maybe even a Doctorate) in literature.
I am minoring in Ethnic Studies. With an English major, it offers many opportunities to read perspectives that have been (historically speaking) overlooked or overshadowed. Reading the works W.E.B. DeBois, bell hooks, and stories like The Interesting Narrative (by Olaudah Equiano) and Pachinko (by Min Jin Lee) show how multi-faceted literature can be, and show especially how distinct cultures can be unified by emotions and imagery (Eileen Chang is still a favorite in the latter respect!).
My Undergraduate Research Fellow project explored the continued relevance of Dante and The Divine Comedy's muse Beatrice throughout history -- making connections to novellas like Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. Recently, I presented specifically on the connections between Dante and the film Portrait of a Lady on Fire (directed by Céline Sciamma) at UNO's European Studies Conference. The continued relevance of historical literature has been really eye opening in my research and continues to provoke connections in my daily life.
