The Department of English congratulates the recipients of the Calvin T. Ryan Library Scholarship and the Don Duryea Memorial Scholarship.
The recipient of the Calvin T. Ryan Library Scholarship for 2021 is Emma Allen from Ayr, Nebraska. Emma is an English Education 7-12 major with a minor in Family Studies.
Established by the friends and family of Calvin T. Ryan, this scholarship will be awarded to an English major. Selection is based upon scholarship and requires a minimum 3.0 GPA, accomplishments, and professional goals.
The recipient of the Don Duryea Memorial Scholarship is Charlotte Okraska from Clay Center, Nebraska. Charlotte is a double major in English and Biology with an emphasis in wildlife. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Regent’s Scholarship. At UNK, she is part of the Thompson Scholars Learning Community. This 2021 summer, she participated in the competitive Student Summer Research Program (SSRP) during which she worked on a project titled “Describing Salvia pinacatensis.” Salvia pinacatensis is a new species of plant; in writing up a species description of it, Charlotte drew upon each of her majors to complete the project.
Established by the friends and family of former English professor, Donald Duryea, this scholarship will be awarded to a senior student majoring in English with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
Thank you to our donors for their generous investment in UNK students. Thanks as well to the University of Nebraska Foundation. Congratulations, Emma and Charlotte!
