A UNL alum, Crews was mentored by U.S. Poet Laureate and Nebraskan Ted Kooser. Crews lived for a bit at a no-electricity monastery. Fans of Mary Oliver will like his poetry. You can check out his books/anthologies here. You may have heard him on NPR ("Poetry Provides Comfort — Through The Pandemic And Beyond") talking about his popular 2021 anthology, How to Love the World: Poems of Gratitude and Hope. Here's a video interview with him as well.

Student Success Announcements
⭐ Carolyn Bundi completed a Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) project, titled “The Horseman of the Apocalypse Pestilence” on representations of disease in literature.
⭐ Haley Burford received a $5,000 Founders Fund scholarship from the national office of Phi Eta Sigma, freshman honor society.
⭐ Tyler Jacobs, B.A. 2021, published several poems this past summer: “Bone Teeth” in White Hall Review; “White Lilies” and “Notes on Yesterday” in Wax Paper; and “June 21: Poem to Kearney” in Runestone.
⭐ Charlotte Okraska completed a Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) project, titled “Describing Salvia pinacatensis.” Salvia pinacatensis is a new species of plant; Charlotte drew upon each of her majors (biology and English) to complete the project.
⭐ Makenzie Petersen, B.A.E. 2021, received a $1,000 Graduate Studies scholarship from the national office of Phi Eta Sigma, freshman honor society.
Featured Majors and Minors
In addition to a major in English Education 7-12, the Department of English also offers a major in Language Arts 7-12. Check out the program here: LINK.
Gabi Goeden, from West Point, Nebraska, is one of several students majoring in Language Arts 7-12. Other current students at UNK have combined Language Arts 7-12 with a double major in Spanish or Elementary Education K-6.
Featured English Alumni
🎓 This month’s featured alumna is Sarah Kniep 🎓
Sarah Kniep graduated in 2012 from UNK with a B.A. in English and a minor in Spanish. At UNK, Sarah was a member of the inaugural soccer team and participated in a variety of intramural sports each year. She was an Undergraduate Research Fellow and presented at the Department of English SCLL conferences. After graduation, she attended the University of Nebraska College of Law, where she served as Executive Editor of the Nebraska Law Review and was fortunate to publish her own article in the Review. She earned her J.D. in 2015 with high distinction. After passing the bar exam, she began practicing at O’Neill, Heinrich, Damkroger, Bermeyer & Shultz, P.C., L.L.O., a law firm in Lincoln. Her practice focuses primarily on business and corporate law, including real estate transactions, mergers and acquisitions and related commercial transactions.
