************Monday Recommendations from the Reading Circle***********
Looking for a hidden gem to watch before fall classes begin? Then check out these films suggested by our friends at the Calvin T. Ryan Library.
Sharon Kofoed, Library Curriculum Associate
Damsel in Distress with Fred Astaire, George Burns, and Gracie Allen, loosely based on the novel by P.G. Wodehouse
David Arredondo, Collection Services Librarian
Starship Troopers! It’s not high art by any means, but still so great. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is also a great movie if you enjoy the horror genre but with a twist, and I don’t think it’s widely known. Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite films, ever. If you prefer TV shows – Utopia! Watch the British one first, then the American version. Both were cancelled which is a shame. Dark humor at its finest.
Makylee Kaping, Acquisitions Associate
I’m not sure if it is a real “hidden gem,” but the film Howl’s Moving Castle is a great adaptation of the children’s book by Diana Wynne Jones.
Matt McDowall, Library Information Systems Support Specialist
It's 25 years old, and still, not enough people have seen Big Night.
Lisa Mount, Library Circulation Manager
The Big Sleep (1949)
Joseph Anderjaska, Library Access Services Associate
I’d have to recommend The Battle for Bunker Hill (2008). Unless you went to KU, studied film, or had the privilege of knowing Professor Kevin Willmott, you’ll probably never bother to see this wonderful jewel of a film that operates as contemporary western, sci-fi, and political/social commentary without giving in to any of these genres completely. Not to mention that it was made in Kansas by local professionals!
Kimberly McNutt, Cataloging and Metadata Associate
The Trouble with Harry (directed by Alfred Hitchcock)
